Shri Adi guru Shankaracharya had visited and meditated here at this hill 2500 years back . The temple was renovated in 371 BC by king Gopaditya, founder of Gopkar dynasty. It is maintained by the Jammu and Kashmir Dharmarth Trust. located at a height of 6095 feet above the sea level, It is a protected monument by Archaeological survey of India. All festivals are celebrated here. During Maha Shivaratri and Shankarajayanti thousands of devotes visit the temple.
Shri Adi guru Shankaracharya the great saint of Bharata was born on Shankarajayanti in 509 BCE. This day is also observed as philosophers day.
Every year on Shankarajayanti thousands of people across the country assemble at Shankaracharya hill Srinagar to pray for One India Strong India. They pray for Peace, Prosperity and National Harmony.
